Backpackers will soon have access to SpaceX's Starlink internet-from-space service, which will now be available beyond boats, airplanes, van lifers, Amazonian settlements, and rural homes in more than 75 nations.

The new DC-powered Starlink Mini dish is small and looks like a thick laptop. It neatly integrates the Wi-Fi router. It also has remarkable speeds that surpass 100 Mbps and uses less power than conventional Starlink terminals.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk declared on X that this specific product can change the planet and that installing it only takes five minutes or less.

Compared to the standalone AC-powered Wi-Fi router and Standard Actuated dish that we tested two years ago, the Mini package surprisingly uses a lot less electricity. In particular, it utilizes an average of only 20–40W, while the prior configuration used 33–62W. This indicates that a smaller 10,000mAh (40Wh) portable battery, which you may already own, may power the Mini dish for about an hour. As an alternative, you can extend your usage period by two or three hours by using a power bank like the Anker Prime 27,650mAh (99.54Wh).

It is crucial to remember that for best results, a USB-C PD power supply with a minimum 100W (20V/5A) rating is required.

When combined with the kickstand and 49.2 foot (15 m) DC power cable, the small dish weighs only 2.43 pounds (1.1 kg) or 3.37 pounds (1.53 kg). 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches (298.5 x 259 x 38.5 mm) are its measurements. It can tolerate dust, rain, and brief submersion in water because of its IP67 rating.

Starlink Mini is now an add-on option for house layouts in the United States. There is a $100 price difference between the normal dish and the $599 pricing of the Mini set. There will be an additional $30 monthly cost if the Mini Roam service is added to the current $120 home membership. Starlink Mini subscribers can get up to 50GB of mobile data each month, a limited number of departing US Starlink subscribers received early-access invitations offering the chance to buy extra data for $1 per gigabyte.

According to details on a Starlink support page, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama are purportedly the countries where Starlink Mini is offered. You can purchase plans for either Mobile-Regional Service or Mini Service. It is important to remember that Starlink Mini is a relatively new product on the US market. While it is crucial to note that using the Mini while driving or in the ocean is legally prohibited, the aforementioned nations do not impose any data caps or speed constraints. SpaceX has stated that it plans to grow into more markets in the future.

The goal of Starlink, as mentioned on the support website, is to make it more affordable, especially for people who have not been able to buy or get internet globally. First off, in areas like the US with high usage, where the Starlink Mini places more burden on the satellite network, a restricted quantity of Starlink Mini Kits are being sold for a premium price.

"Our primary goal is to lower the price of Starlink, particularly for individuals who have not been able to purchase it or have access to it abroad. A restricted number of Starlink Mini Kits are being sold at a higher beginning price in areas such as the US where the Starlink Mini is causing extra load on the satellite network."
